Laboratory teaching is an indispensable part of science education and reinforce students’ learning experiences. However, the scientific ideas covered at secondary school levels are taught with only very limited support of the corresponding experiments. Currently schools are faced with difficulties in providing sufficient equipment and projects to encourage students to take part in investigative study, and many of them opt for long laboratory reports as an alternative. This project is to develop a centralized repository of selected experiments for improving the physics learning experience of senior secondary students. Lab in Your Pocket (LYP) is a platform using students’ smartphones connected onto an Arduino system as a measuring tool. It overcomes the issue of limited built-in sensors in smartphones and extends the possibility to perform various physics experiments. Four experiments including gas laws, magnetism, environmental monitoring and plant growth were developed and another four experiments are in progress. In partnership with 18 secondary schools since September 2018, experimental data from participants have shown high precision of setup and positive feedback was collected. LYP enhanced students’ understanding in specific topics and raised their interest in physics and conducting experiment.
