Recent evidence in the United Kingdom indicates a rise in mental health problems in children and young people in the last 10 years, with current estimates of 1 in 8 experiencing some kind of mental disorder. Alongside this increase, prevention and early intervention has become an increasing policy priority, with schools as a particular focus for support. This talk describes the current approaches and emerging evidence from two large scale national studies ongoing in the UK: Education for Wellbeing: a large scale randomised control trial of school based mental health interventions; and HeadStart: a complex area-based programme to foster resilience, improve positive wellbeing and prevent mental health problems. Learning to date from these two programme will be shared and implications for school based practice will be discussed.
