Hong Kong has been promoting STEM Education for some time, with schools organising all kinds of STEM activities, study programmess and competitions to increase students’ learning motivation, encouraging students to take charge of their learning as they acquire, synthesise and apply knowledge across different subjects, thus developing their creativity and problem solving skills. Self-regulated learning (SRL) bears many similarities to STEM Education: It motivates students to be become life-long learners who can apply learning strategies and reflective thinking skills in the active pursuit of knowledge. The speaker will share how his school designs its school-based curriculum with SRL in mind. Using STEM Education as a starting point, the school has introduced project learning and developed lessons that are student-centred, interactive and engaging. Having created a rich learning environment and modified teaching methods, the school ensures that their students are motivated by the joy of learning and a sense of accomplishment, and be able to learn actively, unleash their creativity and create their own future. The two speakers are both experienced teachers in fashion design, a subject which has close ties with STEM. Through STEM project learning, students can apply the latest technology to create the trendiest items that receive critical acclaim in the fashion world. The speakers will share their strategies and insights into developing STEM curriculum and innovative lessons, including a cross-subject project learning resource pack to stimulate students’ learning interest and develop their creativity, collaboration skills and problem solving skills. They will also demonstrate two self-learning platforms that they have spent ten years developing, and explain how IT can enhance STEM teaching. By providing subject information and content about fashion design, including notes, video clips, PowerPoint presentations and games, students’ self-learning motivation can be enhanced.
